The
ancient city of Girona is ideally situated in Catalunya, with the rugged
coastline of the Costa Brava a short distance away, the French border
less than an hour's drive and Barcelona 90 minutes to the south.
Girona
is much more accessible than ever before. Until recently Girona has not
been considered a short stay destination due to the airport being relegated
to serving charter flights, but all that has changed with the introduction
of daily scheduled services from both GB Airways and RyanAir
and Girona is set to become a popular weekend destination.
Dating
from pre-Roman times, the city is full of historical sites and in the
last 2,000 it has been under seige 25 times and captured seven. The magnificent
cathedral is perched high above the rest of the city and has the widest
Gothic nave in the world at just under 23 meters. The cathedral was built
between the 12th and 14th century on the site of a mosque dating from
when the Moors occupied the city.
The
city is bisected by the river Onyar, which separates the modern city,
rich on coal mining and other industries, from the narrow cobbled streets
and steep starways of the old town. Built right on the banks of the Onyar
are ochre coloured houses, forming a colourful parade. The river is spanned
by several bridges, including one by Gustav Eiffel, responsible for the
Eiffel Tower in Paris and the design of New York's Statue of Liberty.
