Figueres is the capital of the Alt Empordà, one of the oldest areas of Catalunya.

It lies between the Pyrenees and Gavarres ranges on the Costa Brava, with good connections to the rest of the region.

Its most famous native was Salvador Dalí, and the Teatre-Museu Dalí is the second most visited art museum in the whole of Spain, second only to the Prado in Madrid. Also born in Figueres was the inventor of the submarine, Narcís Monturiol.

Getting there
As well as Girona airport, many people choose to fly to Barcelona airport, picking up a hire car or taking the train for the remainder of the journey. Figueres has its own station, just 90 minutes north of Barcelona-Sants station.
