Estartit
is a former fishing village that owes much of its popularity as a tourist
destination to the sandy beach that stretches 6 km along the coast.
The town has a fair
sized marina, and the beach looks across to the Illes Medes, islands
that are protected as a nature reserve. The Medas are a popular destination
for scuba
diving and snorkeling, and there are regular glass bottomed
tour boats and even a submarine to let you explore the subterranean views.
Where
to stay
Although much accommodation in Estartit is aimed at the package tourist,
private villas and apartments are available in Estartit throughout the
year.
Getting
there
There are
daily flights to Girona
and Barcelona airports, where many people choose to pick up
a hire car or take the train for the remainder of the journey; the nearest
station to Estartit is Flaçà, although Figueres is also
30 minutes away, just a few stops further than Girona and only 90 minutes
north of Barcelona-Sants station. However, taxis are both expensive
and few and far between, so it is better to arrange some kind of transport
to your destination in advance.
