Driving from Barcelona
A car really comes into its own when visiting locations outside the city, such as the monastery at Montserrat or the beach resorts south of Barcelona.
Although they can be visited using public transport, there are several disadvantages, making car hire a much more attractive option; trains into Barcelona can finish as early as 21:30, meaning you lose the flexibility to travel when and where you want, and conditions can be hot and cramped, particularly in the summer.
Navigation on main roads can be confusing at the time of writing (March 2004), due to a change the the numbering. The old NII is now the A2, while the old A7 is now the AP7 and old A2 is now the AP2.
Straightforward enough, but the signage has been changed is some places, but not others.
This means that that a sign for the A2 can mean either the old A2 or the new; unfortunately this type of situation is common in Spain.
