The Universal Forum of Cultures, or Forum 2004 for short, kicks off on April 23 2004, the Día de Sant Jordi. The Forum is intended to promote study, reflection and innovative research through a process of dialogue involving all of the agents and all of the cultures that make up the contemporary world. The purpose of the event is to contribute to the articulation of a culture based on peace, diversity and sustainability – a culture that will make it possible for globalization to proceed in a manner that reflects a set of shared ethical values.
As a result of the expected number of visitors to Barcelona for the Forum, major works are taking place throughout the city. A tramline is being introduced in Avenguda Diagonal, many roads are being upgraded, buildings constructed, hotels expanded and new hotels being created from existing buildings.
