Hotels in Barcelona
Although
until recently there was an acute shortage of hotels in Barcelona, particularly
around the time of the Barcelona Grand Prix, boat show or large scale
trade fairs, the construction of a number of new hotels in the last
few years means that you now have a bigger choice of hotels and lower
prices.
Your choice of hotel may depend on your reason for visiting Barcelona. Many tourists to Barcelona choose to stay close to the sights or the nightlife, while business travellers often select hotels close to the Fira, Barcelona's exhibition and conference halls. Below we offer some advice on selecting a hotel.
Choosing a tourist hotel
If you're going to visit Barcelona for tourism or leisure then your main three considerations are likely to be location, cost and facilities.
Popular areas include the Ramblas, the gothic quarter and Passeig de Gràçia, as well as El Born for the nightlife. However, if you're trying to stretch your budget, or if you are looking to choose a specific hotel such as the luxury Hotel Arts, then it will make your life easier if your hotel is close to a metro station at least. Taxis are reasonably cheap compared with many cities, although can be in short supply, especially at weekends and throughout August.
One point to watch is that some hotel booking websites don't make it clear which of their hotels are not actually in the city, but the province of Barcelona instead. This can can leave you some way to travel to Barcelona, but if you are in any doubt check the postcode - Barcelona city postcodes are 5 digits long, always beginning 080.
Specific hotel recommendations include; the budget Internacional, 5-star Le Meridien and 1898 on the Ramblas; Rialto in the gothic quarter, with Hotel Colon, directly opposite the gothic cathedral; Banys Orientals in El Born; the 5-star Majestic Hotel on Passeig de Gràcia, with the Claris nearby; and Barceló Sants, which although it is mainly aimed at business travellers, is directly above Barcelona-Sants station and ideal for the metro and mainline stations.
Hotels ideal for business travellers
Just as tourists may choose a hotel because of its vicinity to the sights, if you are travelling to Barceona on business you may prefer to choose a hotel close to where you'll be visiting and of course your contacts may offer to arrange your hotel for you and there are several hotels convemiently located for anyone visiting the Universities.
Barcelona is host to dozens of major exhibitions and conferences every year and so if you'll be spending most of your days in the exhibition halls of the Fira you'll be happy to know that there are several hotels within easy walking distance. The Plaza in Plaça Espanya springs to mind as the obvious example of a good 4-star hotel close to the exhibition halls, but there are also three close to Barcelona-Sants station - the Barceló Sants (mentioned above), Expo and Grand Torre de Catalunya.
Luxury hotels in Barcelona
If your only concern is luxury while in Barcelona then again you have several options. Hotel Arts has a whole list of awards, although the Vila Olimpic sea-front is rather souless. Much more traditional are the Majestic, Claris, Le Meridien and the Palace, which was formerly the Ritz Barcelona; all offer world class service in buildings with truely spectacular facades.
